Figure 5.20 Chronic otitis media can be seen with radiographs and CT due to thickening of the bone of the tympanic bullae (arrows).
(a,b) Ventrodorsal radiographs: the radiographs differ in field of view and center of the x‐beam; the bullae are the focus in (b).
Nonuniform mild thickening of the bullae is present bilaterally (arrows), indicating bilateral chronic disease. With concurrent tympanic
soft tissue, chronic‐active otitis media would be considered. Note there is also uniform abnormal soft tissue in the left nasal cavity
(* in a). (c,d) Transverse and (e) dorsal plane images. In the CT images, the medial compartments (arrows) are completely filled with soft
tissue, whereas there are small accumulations in the lateral compartments (arrowheads). However, there is greater thickening of the
bone surrounding the lateral compartments of the bulla (arrows). In the dorsal plane reconstruction, the nasal cavities (NC) are also
bilaterally abnormal, with complete loss of the nasal turbinates, and the soft tissue seen in the radiographs is no longer present. This
was the result of chronic destruction secondary to nasal lymphoma and radiation therapy. Source: Images courtesy of Dr Merrilee
