RESPIRATION AND CIRCULATION
This may need two sessions.
Truth to Teach (Source)
Genesis 2:7 ‘The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.’
1 Corinthians 6:19 ‘Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?’
God has given every living creature a system of respiration that is vital for the continuation of
life.
To learn about the human respiratory system.
To observe the effect of exercise on pulse rate.
To learn how blood circulates in the body through arteries and veins.
To learn about the structure and working of the heart.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Read and discuss the above verse.
3. Remind the children of the gas (carbon dioxide) used by plants in photosynthesis and the one
(oxygen) needed by us to breathe. Describe the human respiratory system.
4. Let the children blow into a bottle of lime water to show the cloudy effect, indicating the
presence of carbon dioxide. It takes 8 seconds to turn 3 cm of water in a test-tube grey.
5. Talk about the way in which oxygen is taken around the body. The harder we work the more
energy our muscles need so our heart beats faster and we breathe faster.
6. Let the children take each other’s pulse before and after exercise. (Adults = 70 beats per
second but it is faster in children.)
7. Record these results on the computer and/or as graphs.
8. Refer briefly to plant respiration through tiny pores on the leaf’s surface that also allow
oxygen, water and carbon dioxide out. These pores are called stomata/stoma.
