Science Y3/Y4 – God’s amazing creatures – week 6
FOCUS ON AMPHIBIANS
Truth to Teach
To consolidate the characteristics of amphibians
To learn about the life-cycle of a frog
Way to Work
1. Review the previous lessons by putting the children in pairs to ask each other questions about
the work covered so far.
2. Show pictures of a video/DVD of a frog and its life-cycle. Alternatively, visit a pond
with frogspawn or frogs. Some frogspawn could be kept in the classroom until the eggs hatch
out.
3. Talk about the groups of amphibians.
Frogs and toads
Newts
Salamanders
4. Review the characteristics of amphibians.
5. Discuss the differences between frogs and toads.
A toad’s skin is rough and drier; a frog’s is smooth and wet.
Frogs have longer legs.
The toads’ eggs are laid in strips but frogs’ are in a mass.
6. Let the children record the information learnt in the lesson or make a study of an amphibian.
6. Review the lesson and thank God for amphibians.
Learning for Life
The children will have learnt the characteristics and other factual information about amphibians.
They may also be gaining a sense of the wonder of God’s creation as they see how animals are so
fitted to their habitats, etc.
