Science Y3/Y4 – God’s amazing creatures – week 8

                                       FOCUS ON MINI-BEASTS – SPIDERS

        Truth to Teach

 To review the characteristics of mini-beasts

 To study the life of a spider

        Way to Work

        1. Review the previous lesson on mini-beasts.

        2. Show an excerpt of the video/DVD of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ or take the children outside to
hunt for spiders, or bring some into the classroom.

        3. Distinguish between an insect (six legs and three body parts) and a spider (eight legs and two
body parts). Explain that a spider is an arachnid.

        4. Discuss the range of size, colour and shape of spiders. There are about 30,000 species of
spider, including money spiders, trap-door spiders, wolf spiders, etc. Some children may be
fearful of spiders, but others may wish to find out about tarantulas, etc.

        5. Talk about how spiders’ webs are made and the function of them.

        6. Talk about the life of spiders under the headings of Lesson 2.

        7. Let the children record their own work, with illustrations.

        8. Gather to review the lesson.

        Learning for Life

The children will have gained more experience in gathering and recording information. They will have
learnt more factual information about spiders but also realise that some creatures are useful to us

whilst others are harmful and need to be handled with care, or even avoided.
