Science Y3/Y4 – God’s amazing creatures – week 11
FOCUS ON MINI-BEASTS – INSECTS 2
Truth to Teach
Report back about insects in the pit-fall traps, learning to recognise them
To learn about, draw and label one chosen insect
To look at insect life-cycles
Way to Work
1. Review the previous lesson, especially the insects in the pit-fall traps
2. Show excerpts of a video/DVD on insects to widen the children’s knowledge of this vast group
of God’s amazing creatures. If possible, the insect’s life-cycle should be shown.
3. Talk about the parts of an insect’s body and the function of each part.
a) Antennae
b) Jointed legs
c) Eyes
d) Wings
e) Feet
f) Hairs on body
g) Mouth-parts
h) Head, thorax, abdomen
4. The children should select one or more insects to find out more about, draw and label.
Give guidelines on labelling using a ruler, neat writing, etc.
5. Review the life-cycle of a butterfly which most children should know about. Give them the
challenge of finding out about other insects’ life-cycles. Talk about death and new life which
we see in the life-cycle, also God’s planning for increase and reproduction.
6. End by thanking God for his amazing creation.
Learning for Life
The children should be learning to recognise more common insects and will have increased their
factual knowledge of the different species. Their study skills also should be improving as they
conduct more of their own research.
