Page 10 - FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFE; EXPLORING GOD’S UNIVERSE
P. 10
Nations often have different foods, flags, customs, national costume, etc
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Explain the difference between British Isles and United Kingdom. (The former
includes UK and Republic of Ireland; UK is made up of N Ireland, Scotland, England
and Wales.)
3. Talk about the meaning of ‘united’ and ‘kingdom’. Talk about Queen Elizabeth II
ruling over the UK. Show a Union Flag explaining that it is made up of three flags
(England and Wales, Scotland and N Ireland). When it is flown on a ship, it is called a
Union Jack.
4. Explain that today’s lesson involves a journey in a toy car, starting at one end of the
UK and travelling the full length if it.
(Alternatively, visitors from the four countries could come to share a little about their
country.)
Put the car on Land’s End on a large map of the UK. Push it up through Cornwall and
Devon talking about the beautiful beaches, etc. Show the flag of England and a
picture of a rose, explaining that often countries have a flag and a symbol.
Push it up through the country into Wales and show a picture of a daffodil and a leek,
both of which are Welsh symbols. Show a picture of the Welsh national costume. Talk
about the Welsh language and word for Wales – Clywd.
Push the car up to Scotland and show the flag and a picture of a thistle. Show
pictures of kilts, bagpipes, etc.
Push it to N Ireland and show the Irish flag and a picture of a shamrock. Explain that
it is often called the ‘Emerald Isle’ because the land is so green.
5. Each child could colour/paint/draw a flag, symbol, costume or food from each
country for a display and /or complete the worksheet.
6. If time allows, a DVD showing features of each country could be shown during the
week.
