13.6 Leave without Pay
Employees who have exhausted all sick leave and recreational leave may be able to apply for leave
without pay.
Leave without pay is granted at the discretion of the President or Secretary General and must not
exceed six (6) months in duration.
Each request for leave without pay must be submitted in writing to the Secretary General or Executive
Director and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Where possible, employee should give no less than four (4) weeks notice of such leave.
Employee should note that periods of leave without pay in excess of four (4) weeks in any year of
service will not count as service for long service leave purposes.
13.7 Study Leave
GNOC is committed to attracting, developing and retaining high quality staff and therefore, encourages
its employees to continue to enhance their skills.
At times this will require employees to enroll in long-term study. In that respect, GNOC, on a case-by-
case basis, may be willing to make arrangements to enable employees to undertake part-time study
during work hours.
Employees wishing to undertake study should consult with the Secretary General or Executive Director
to determine the impact, if any, that this will have on the current work situation at GNOC.
All requests for Study Leave should be submitted in writing to the Executive Director.
13.8 Time in Lieu Policy
The Time in Lieu Policy is designed to compensate for efforts of GNOC staff in undertaking their
roles outside what are considered normal working hours.
The spirit of the policy takes into account the extract below dealing with “Hours of Work” from this
Manual.
“Normal days of work are Monday to Friday with hours of duty determined in consultation with the
Executive Director.
Staff are encouraged to work flexibly, by varying daily hours and days of work where appropriate.
The nature and scope of the role may require attendance at meetings and events outside normal work
hours for which overtime will not be paid.
13.8.1 Who qualifies and how is it administered?
Staff who are required to work weekends will receive one (1) day leave for every 2 days worked.
Public Holidays will be one for one. The process to claim is as follows:
• Staff using Time in Lieu (TIL) leave will complete a Time in Lieu Submission Form
