MACCABI CYCLING CLUB - REPORT
President : John Gould
The last year and a half has been very disjointed due to the
constant restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
The regular Sunday morning rides continued, when allowed.
The club issues a new outfit every second year and the 2020 Outfit in light blue
was received very well and briefly cased a surge in membership and enthusiasm
to participate in rides.
We were fortunate to be able to hold our 3rd annual Rambam Ride which has
consistently been our largest participation event. Our goal has been to engage the
wider Jewish Community to help them experience the adventure and friendship of
cycling in a group and we have had 3 successes.
Although the Club’s primary goal is not about racing and competition, a few
members use our race licence and compete. Remarkably, Matt Sherwin raced in
the Elite Category of the Bay Cycling Classic in a team with Tour de France rider
Luke Durbridge. His good form continued when he entered the A Grade Masters
National Road Series placing 2nd in the Road Race, 2nd in the Time Trial and 3rd
in the Criterium for a 2nd Overall. He also competed in the Elite Melbourne to
Warnambool Road Race with Maccabi Club roadside support.
As we emerge from lockdown, our challenge will be to reignite the interest in
drawing the large Jewish cycling community to seeing the value in participating in
our events.
