                          WYNNUM HIGH SCHOOL CADET CORI’S

                                    CADETS
The Wynnum State High School Cadet Unit began its training on
the Second of February. All the cadets were raw except the eight
N.C.O.’s who had attended courses at Greenbank during the Christmas
vacation period. The unit is commanded by Captain Griffith, with
Lieutenants Law and McCormack in charge of “Q” store affairs and
training. The unit was divided into three platoons with Under Officers
Mitchell and Monks and Sergeant Bielenberg in command of number
one, two and three platoon, respectively. Sergeants Gray, Edwards and
Evans are the platoon sergeants. The Cafferky Shield is to be awarded
annually for platoon efficiency, and a prize is to be given for the most
efficient cadet. Training was commenced with a strength of ninety-four,
including officers of cadets. Although without uniforms for the first
few weeks of training, the cadets proved themselves eager to become
efficient. The unit was issued with uniforms at Kelvin Grove H.Q. on
the first of March. The next parade was devoted to our instruction in
the wearing of the uniform and was conducted by Sergeant-Majors Lee
           and Machin.
An event of the near future was the “Anzac-Day” Parade. Foot
training was looked to, and a high standard of dress and bearing
achieved for both the parade at school, and the march to the Wynnum
Shrine of Remembrance. On the afternoon of the twenty-sixth of May
the unit paraded before the public at the school fete. June the fourth
saw a party of fifty volunteers attend the Queen’s Review at Victoria
Park. The parades between June the fourth and the eighth of August
were devoted to training, preparatory to our annual camp of two weeks,
from the eighth to the sixteenth of August.
All of the cadets, without exception, profited from, and enjoyed to
some extent, their stay at Greenbank. Five cadets. Corporal Robinson,
Cadet Harris, Corporal Wren, U./O. Mitchell and Cadet Griffith repre
sented the school in the Lord Chalmsford Shoot. The team was captained
by Corporal Cooper. We came fourth out of seven schools competing.
Four of our cadets spent a week in Canungra doing a jungle training
course. They were : Corporals Kydd, Robinson. Wren and Sgt.
Bielenberg. Cadet Rose established the remarkable time of one minute
