at Milton Courts and resulted in a win for Wynnum by 15 games.
Our “B” team played well, winning three of their matches .
The Inter-House Competition took place as scheduled, and Went
worth House was again victorious, defeating Lilley and Griffith by
comfortable margins.
In conclusion we would like to express our thanks to the Wynnum
District Lawn Tennis Association for the use of their courts for matches
and for practice.
GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS
This year the tennis fixtures were divided into two zones, the North
Zone and South Zone. We were included in the South Zone along with
Cavendish Road, Salisbury and Commercial High School. Again this
year we did not compete in the G.P.S. fixtures.
Our “A” team won against Salisbury, but was not so successful
against the other two schools. The “B” team proved successful against
Cavendish Road.
A social match was played against Cleveland High School towards
the end of the season. Wynnum had to put up a hard battle, but proved
successful on the day.
The teams were : “A” team, Rhelma Tovey, Wendy Metcalf, Lyn
Newcomb (capt.), Marjorie Lee. “B” team : Annette Curtis, Doreen
Curtis, Margaret Pleace, Kay Keegan, Barbara Smith, Aliette McLellan.
SWIMMING
In the inter-school swimming this year we had few outstanding
wins. G. Curtis being the only individual winner from the school in the
Q.S.S.S.S.A. carnival, coming first in his age-group breaststroke, while
he and R. Nichols came first in the Queensland Life-Saving Pairs Cham
pionship, with P. Railings and J. McQuillan earning second.
R. Wren came fourth in the boys’ dive at the Q.S.S.S.S.A. carnival,
and D. Jaffrey came fourth in the breaststroke and fifth in the medley.
M. Kerr came second in the backstroke and G. Martin second in the
dive in this same carnival. All these performances helped gain points
but unfortunately these were not numerous enough to gain us a cup for
the school.
P. Clarke, P. Baker, J. Eardley, E. O’Shea, K. Paxman, T. Niebling,
N. Simonsen, P. Martin and R. Paxman all did well enough in the
district swimming carnival to warrant their selection to represent the
district in the State Primary Schools’ Carnival in Brisbane.
In our Inter-House Swimming Carnival, Lilley proved themselves
the victors with 148 points, Wentworth next with 146 and Griffith third
with 116. There were quite a few records broken and the performances
maintained the usual high standard.
The individual champions were : Boys : Senior, G. Curtis; Junior,
M. Hauck; Minor, K. Paxman. Girls : Senior G. Martin; Junior, P.
Baker; Minor, P. Clarke.
The school life-saving work has maintained its usual high standard
and our girls’ team, G. Martin, M. Kerr, B. Arnold, F. Ede and J.
Cafferky, came third in the McWhirter Cup Life-Saving Competition.
Their work was superior to the others and they were leading until the
speed contest. In this they lacked the speed of the other teams, but
their work was always very good.
There were so many life-saving awards gained during the last
season that we shall only mention the highest awards gained. T. Senden.
J. Knox, D. Jaffrey, M. Maccoll, G. Curtis, G. Martin. E. Legge and
C. Falanagan, all gained their Bronze Crosses.
