Although our First XIII met with little success in the past season they
acquitted themselves well for such a light side. In most games our forwards
held their own in the first half but were unable to hold their heavier opponents
in the latter stages of their matches. Most of the players should benefit from
the experience they gained during the season as almost the whole team had
their first year in the open grade — some of them coming up directly from last
year’s 9 Stone Premiership team.
Noel Gallagher and Ross Patterson were untiring workers in the forwards.
Gallagher was successful in representing Brisbane in this grade.
Ivan Udowika and Frank Whately were probably our best backs and
although they did not receive much of the ball made the most of their
opportunities.
We look forward to a more successful season next year since quite a few of
this season’s team will be playing again and should acquit themselves more
creditably.
C Grade a well balanced
combination -------------
Coach: Mr. Weise.
Captain: Lee Williams.
Following the outstanding success of last year’s
C grade who won the Metropolitan Premiership, it
was decided that the school would again field a
C grade team. Although the team put up quite a
reputable fight and at no time did it disgrace the
school’s football reputation, it could not equal last
year’s effort. In spite of inexperience the team proved to be a well balanced
combination which always gave a good account of itself and stood up under
pressure. It is difficult to single out individual players but congratulations must
go to Warwick Wockner, our top scorer, whose tremendous penetrating ability
started many scoring movements. I would just like to thank all members of
the C grade team for the fine sportsmanship which they showed during the
season and I hope that next year’s team will get as much enjoyment out of
playing for the school as we have this year.
