Young Cricketers show enthusiasism
and talent
The visit of the hard-hitting West Indians last season
stimulated a fairly
widespread revival of interest and enthusiasm for the game.
It does not, however,
appear to have penetrated the outer fastness of Wynnum. The most note
worthy feature of this year’s early season has been the difficulty experienced
in filling two senior teams a sad commentary upon the absence of school
spirit among many who should be quite capable of pulling their weight in
at least a B or C team. Let us hope that the interest during the winter months
in the English Test series will be reflected in keen rivalry for selection in teams
for the late 1961 season.
Fortunately for the future of the game at W.H.S., there is no lack of either
enthusiasm or talent in the under 15 age group. This may be in part due to the
success of last year’s under 15 team, who brought home Wynnum’s first pennant
for some years, with their victory in the zone premiership. In an endeavour to
foster the maximum interest among this age group, the Association has intro
duced this year a division into A and B grades, with the ultimate intention of
playing the A grade matches on turf wickets, when sufficient can be made
available. At the completion of the early 1961 season this year's A team seem
well on the way to retaining the honours won by their predecessors, having
suffered no defeats. Outstanding performers have been C. Klaproth and R.
Deighton with the ball and W. Hamlet with the bat. The B team has been
less successful as a team, but should provide next year’s senior teams with some
valuable members. One of the most successful all round. W. Goostrey, is no
longer with us, but other creditable performances were turned in by K. Brown,
P. McMahon and S. Morrison.
Of the senior teams, the A’s have acquitted themselves better than expected.
as this team is really a B team required to play in the A grade competition.
They have risen to the occasion quite creditably, and have already had one
victory, worthy performances being contributed by N. Gallagher, T. Ingham
and J. Maccoll. The loss of fast bowler Daley will considerably weaken this
team in the new season. The C team have had two victories, best performances
to date being by J. Dyer (112 n.o.), I. Udowika, and B. Mitchell.
Later this year a combined State Secondary schools team will play a visiting
side from St. George, Sydney a famous cricketing region. Possibly the prospect
of selection for the return visit next year will be an added inducement to “have
a go” and “be in it", for all those who need something more than the love of
the game.
