                           FOOTBALL, 1958
                                   “B” TEAM.
This year the school’s first XIII. played in the “B" grade section
        of inter-school football.
Playing in this division we had quite a successful season winning
matches against Industrial (22-0), Banyo (14-0), Indooroopilly (20-0),
Kedron (22-0), Banyo (11-8), and in the final against Banyo, drew 5-
all (after a controversial decision against us) to share the premiership
        honours.
Captain of the team was Charlie Stobert who was also lucky enough
to be chosen to lead the Brisbane team against Nambour. Also selected
in the Brisbane team were Pete Vela, Ian Hastings, Stewart Robinson,
        Ian Down and Murray Backwell.
Wynnum also travelled to Nambour and came out winners (6-3)
against the team that had been successful against Brisbane.
        Team members were : I. Hastings, J. Sands, S. Loynes, G.
        Cummings, J. Henderson, P. Railings, S. Robinson, E. Pascoe, G.
        Pearson, R. Martin, C. Stobert, P. Vela, P. Banney, N. Szkutko, D.
Dowding, I. Down, T. Neibling, and M. Backwell, all of whom combined
well and it would not be fair to pick out individual players.
Top scorers were Stobert 36 points, Neibling 20 points, Down 15
        points.
In closing, thanks must be given to coach Mr, McCormack who
gave up his time to prepare us for our games.
                                   9 STONE.
This year instead of the usual 8st. 71b. team, the school fielded, in
accordance with B.R.L. rules, a 9st. team, which was coached by Mr.
Doube. After a couple of weeks of fairly rigorous training we were
        fit for “the battle.”
With a fairly strong XIII. we defeated Mitchelton and Industrial
comfortably, but our spirits were somewhat dampened by being beaten
soundly by a better Salisbury side. This was the first of a run of
defeats for the season. The following two weeks saw us beaten by
Banyo and Cavendish Road. However, by changing our tactics and
changing our team around, we defeated Indooroopilly 37-0. On the 2nd
August we went to Nambour with the school, and, although we were
beaten by their 9st. side, we played the best game of the season. It
            was both hard and clean.
The best player of the season was J. Crammond, who also displayed
a feat of miraculous goal-kicking. Harry Lamb, our best forward, was
chosen to play for Queensland. Congratulations, Harry, we heard you
            played a good game.
On behalf of the team I would like to thank our coach, Mr. Doube,
for putting up with us for a season and for arranging a really splendid
            trip to Nambour.
                                                   R KYDD, Captain
