Rules Governing Lakewood Country Club
2. Deciding Ties in Handicap Events:
Match Play – A handicapped match which ends all square will be played off, hole by
hole, until one side wins a hole. The playoff must start on the hole where the match
began. Strokes are to be allowed as in the prescribed round.
Stroke Play – A handicapped stroke play competition which ends in a tie will be
played off, hole by hole, starting on the first hole. Strokes are to be allowed as in a
match play competition. The winner will be the first player to win a hole.
3. Provisional Ball: If a player does not know whether his or her ball is in the penalty
area [identify location], the player may play a provisional ball under Rule 18.3, which
is modified in this way:
In playing the provisional ball, the player may use the stroke-and-distance relief
option, the back-on-the-line relief option or, if it is a red penalty area, the lateral relief
option. If a dropping zone is available for this penalty area, the player may also use
that relief option.
In deciding when that provisional becomes the player's ball in play or if it must or
may be abandoned, Rule 18.3c(2) and 18.3c(3) apply except that:
• When original ball is found in penalty area within three-minute search time, the
player may choose either to:
• Continue to play the original ball as it lies in the penalty area. All strokes taken in
the penalty area will be applied to the provisional ball if the original ball is
abandoned, or
Continue to play the provisional ball in which case the original ball must not be
played.
When original ball is not found within three-minute search time or is known or
virtually certain to be in penalty area, the provisional ball becomes the player's ball in
play.
4. Tree Wells: Relief is not allowed from tree wells and the wood chips within them.
Relief would be granted if the tree is staked or if the tree well is marked as "ground
under repair".
5. Flower Beds: These are considered immovable obstructions. Relief must be taken
at the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole.
6. French Drains: Relief is granted from the small gravel drainage ditches (nearest
point of relief, no nearer the hole).
7. Curbing: All wood and concrete curbing along the cart paths are considered part
of the cart path. Railroad ties and/or landscape concrete blocks used in the
construction of tees, retaining walls, and water hazards are considered an integral
part of the golf course and no relief is granted.
