INWARD TRANSFORMATION
say St. Augustine coined the phrase, “The new is in
the old concealed. The old is in the new revealed.”
Paul was not teaching something completely new
here. The method of renewing the mind was basically
the same as God had instructed the Jewish people
for hundreds of years. It was to hear, obey, speak,
learn, and follow the Truth Yahweh had given them.
But they could not find the lasting change they
needed in the old covenant. It helped, but God had
something better.
The new covenant is a better covenant based on
better promises. Christ is dwelling inside of the new
covenant believer. As new creations, the power to
transform us is within us because of the indwelling
Holy Spirit. He is the agent of renewal. The
instrument He uses is the Word of God. We need to
do our part and put it in our hearts and our mouths.
What was impossible under the Old Testament is
possible now. The words of Christ are life to us.
The instructions for affirming the Truth as given
in the old covenant are valid in the light of the new
covenant. We can benefit from the old covenant when
we view it in the light of the new covenant realities.
It works because Christ is in us.
“This Book of the Law must not depart from your
mouth. Meditate on it day and night so that you may
act carefully according to all that is written in it. For
then you will make your way successful, and you will
be wise.” Joshua 1:8
