wanted his digits and told me that Leroy wanted mine; as usual, Jerome
was lying. The next time I went to the building, I knew I wanted to get
a reaction from him, so I had put on a particularly stunning white dress
and entered the building. The other guards must have known Leroy
was interested in me because they started ragging on him. We did end
up exchanging numbers and began dating in spring. It was a
whirlwind. I remember on our third date I asked Leroy some questions
to try to get to know him. I started asking him questions like what his
favorite color was, his favorite song, etc. I then asked him where he
saw himself in five years. He got on his knees and told me, "Married
to you." That just blew me away. He was right: we were married, but
I guess he did not bank on the separation and divorce part.
Leroy had also been dating another woman. By summer, he had
dropped the other woman and was dating me exclusively. I had
planned a special birthday celebration for him in Virginia Beach. It
was his first time at Virginia Beach and he drank heavily then.
By Labor Day, Leroy had gone to Florida to visit his family and
had taken my picture, showing it to everyone and telling them I was
the one. In November we took a weeklong trip to the mountains in
Virginia. As a part of the trip, we went to Kinston, since it was only a
couple of hours away, and it was the chance for my family to meet
him. I remember addressing his drinking at that time and I made a
promise to him that I would stop smoking if he stopped drinking. I
remember Leroy telling Daddy he was an alcoholic and that we were
