Daddy came back strong. By April, he was planning my fairytale
wedding. I should have listened to my intuition about marrying Leroy
because I was just not into the planning of the wedding. I hardly ever
discussed the wedding, not to the level of most brides. Jerome and
Shannon kept commenting on how I was not excited. I did not have
to worry about that because Daddy was excited for everybody. My
cousin organized a bridal shower for me in Kinston and Daddy was
the only man there. He was determined he was not going to miss a
moment. He hooked up the wedding. He had arranged to have free
limousine service for the out-of-town guests for the entire weekend.
You know those black folks were feeling like celebrities the whole
weekend as they were stepping out of limousines all over town.
The date of the wedding was November 15th. I had a suite at the
Hilton, and I had planned a lady's night out in the suite for the first
night. There were about 30 of my “sistahs”. My sister circle traveled
from DC, Raleigh, and Chicago. Leroy's sisters and others of my new
in-laws were there as well. Everybody was hitting the clubs in Kinston,
limousine style. Everyone was having a ball.
On the day we married, I called Leroy first thing in the morning,
and I remember him having a hangover. He was throwing up because
he and his college boys stayed up drinking all night. I was sick with
diarrhea and had my cousin go to the drugstore to pick up some Pepto
Bismol. That should have been a sign of trouble.
