I knew we were leaving to go to his home in Florida the following
day, and after we left, I told him I needed a better introduction than
the one he had just used with Timothy and Adrienne.
After Christmas, we traveled to Leroy's hometown to meet his
family. When we first arrived, he did at least give me a proper
introduction. After introductions, I remember his five sisters were in
the kitchen whispering to him about whether I had been married
before. He told them to ask me, and, of course, once they found out
I had never been married, owned a business, and did not have any
children, I passed their test with flying colors. They also kept telling
me the Thornburg does not believe in divorces. Based on what they
were saying, it was true. His parents had been married 40 years, and
his four brothers all had been married 20 years plus. Leroy's mother
ruled the family with a strong Christian hand. She was an old-school
Southern Baptist who did not believe in cooking or doing anything on
Sundays. When we married, she would give me my first bible,
engraved "Mr. and Mrs. Thornburg."
When they said the Thornburg did not divorce, I did not know
what they truly meant. On the outside, they had a picture-perfect
family. They were churchgoing, educated folks with strong family
values. That was the image they wanted to portray. But as time passed
on, their issues were revealed. I was approved and accepted into the
family, not knowing then that Leroy had no choice but to bring
someone to the family that he knew they would approve of.
