There is evidence to suggest that Atkins may lead to an increased risk of
heart disease. Other studies suggest that there is no metabolic advantage to
eating high amounts of fat. For South Beach, while it promotes sensible
eating, it makes promises that are not substantiated by ironclad scientific
        evidence.

        Our take on the matter

Okay, so arguably this actually belongs under Banting, but we are putting it
here because of the high fat content involved.

We have a couple of friends who lost weight using heaps of fat. The one’s
idea for breakfast was a cup of black coffee with a huge dollop of butter and
stevia. “Fat keeps you fuller for longer,” she admonished. This, of course, was
followed by a cigarette or two. The other mate became a Crossfit devotee
and he focused on high protein coupled with low-fat soda drinks, but also
usually followed by a cigarette or three.

Darlings, there is no point being a Banting bunny or a Crossfit junkie if
you’re going to undo the health benefits with tar and nicotine, and
phenylalanine and aspartame. He is headed for a heart attack and she is
headed for a stroke, because of the uncontrolled increase in cholesterol due
to the high fat content, exacerbated by cigarettes. There are puh-lenty of
studies which confirm that cigarettes and high fat are a no-no.

We contend that potential issue with any LCHF diet is the heavy leaning
towards high fat foods. The only exception we would make is that such
programmes are probably fine for sports people. They might be able to use
heaps of butter and have a high fat diet due to the fact that they burn all
those calories on the bike or road after. But Carol Calorie, the Couch Potato
