Chapter 6: Eat Right for Your Blood Type Diet
The basic premise of this diet is that people with different blood types need
to eat food that is suitable for their type.
So, there are 4 blood types: A, B, AB and O. These also come with a
“negative” attached. In other words, you are either type A or A-. The O group
is the most common, and in the field of blood transfusions O blood is the
most needed, because most people have this blood type, and because it is
the only blood you can give to someone from another grouping (A, B or AB)
without them dying if they don’t get their own blood type. Give an A type B
blood and there’s trouble, but give them O and they will live.
The diet has apparently been advocated by several people, but the most
prominent is nutritionist Peter J D’Adamo.
The diet stems from the idea that the food you eat responds to the type of
blood that you have, affecting it positively or negatively. It purports that if
you eat food that matches your blood type, you will see a loss in weight, an
increase in energy, and your body will be less afflicted by disease.
The magic bullet
The diet proclaims that people process lectins according to their blood type.
People who therefore eat foods that agree with their type will maintain a
healthy weight and be healthy, while those who don’t will suffer for their
folly.
What the hell are lectins? Well, without turning this into a Biology textbook,
they are carbohydrate-binding proteins essential for the effective and healthy
functioning of cells. This is related to the evolutionary process of the body
through time – though this has been disputed.
