GRADE 6
Grade 6 students discussed and researched about the
topic “Cafeteria Waste” and did “School Waste Audit”.
Waste audit was done to analyze waste stream in a place
like school campus. A waste audit as a pedagogy helped
the students to understand and determine the amount
and types of waste that are generated. Information from
these audits helped them to determine how they can
reduce the amount of waste that is generated. They also
identified the types of recyclable materials and waste
and how much of each category is recovered for recycling
or discarded.
Students were engaged to understand that many
chemicals used in the school campus are hazardous in
nature. Students researched about school cafeteria -
washing of utensils, storage of food, pest control (within
the campus) symbols like corrosive, flammable on the
labels of the different products that are used in
different areas/ facilities within the school. Students
understood the need to read the warning instructions on
these labels and its hazardous nature.
Students made presentation of their findings to the
class. They compiled their survey data for display on the
charts and displayed on the board. They suggested
different ideas including Eco-code for at least one area
in the school which can look towards reducing the use of
these hazardous chemicals in schools.
Students also made a list of products that should be
banned from school campus. Posters were made and later
stuck on the class board for displaying. Students also
prepared a plan and established a waste management
system
