Growing Up
I was born and raised in Riverside California, the daughter of Don and ???
My entire family including Grandpa was from the area. Mom and Dad
were born in Los Angeles and Grandpa in Venice Beach. My grandparents
lived across the street from the airport, and our house was just blocks away.
I spent almost every weekend at my Grandparents house. We were all so
close. We had dinners together frequently, and I had many a sleepover with
Noni and Grandpa. When I got a little older, and our family grew in size,
we moved a few miles away from the airport. There were three kids now
my older brother Robert and younger brother Scott, yes and I am a middle
child and probably live up to all the rumors you have heard about the
“middle child.”.
There was a flight school at the airport that grandpa named after my Dad
it was called ‘Don’s flying school,’ so he spent most of his time at the
airport. Grandpa, who had an absolute passion for flying believed that all
of the boys should learn to fly and at the age of 16 all of them soloed in the
same plane, the Piper cub, which is still at Flabob today. It is safe to say
that hundreds of thousands of pilots learned to fly in a Piper Cub. For many
non-pilots, the Piper Cub is the entirety of small aircraft aviation — like
Kleenex™ is to facial tissue. It was such a popular plane that at peak
production in 1940, a new Piper Cub J-3 rolled off the assembly line every
20 minutes.
