 Giving Thanks
By William NiemaN
Let’s take a break from pol- itics. This is also the month of Thanksgiving, and I am filled with thanks. Two recent events trigger that gratitude. In Sep- tember, I had a health scare from which I am recovering. More on that later. A short time ago, the mail revealed a beautifully hand-crafted portfolio box my adult daughter and son created. I am very grateful for their lov- ing gift. Opening the box, I dis- covered a chronology of articles that I had written for this paper. As I reviewed the many stories, I began to realize that you and I know many area folks deserv- ing of thanks this month. There is not enough space to thank all those we might recognize, so highlighted here are a few story subjects to represent the good people of the greater Newfound Lake community.

The holiday season is a time for giving, and the need to sup- port our community is greater than ever. Fortunately, the Bris- tol Food Pantry, part of Bristol Community Services, rises to the occasion, providing essen- tial support to those in need. With a solid community service history, the food pantry plays a pivotal role in making the holi- days brighter for many families.
It all started a little over 50 years ago when Susan Colby and Diane Payne saw a need in the community. They started collecting food and clothes, and for 45 years, they handed food out to those in need from The Little Shop on North Main Street. Things took a remark- able turn about ten years ago when they moved Bristol Com- munity Services to Pleasant Street in Bristol.
They serve five towns, and
income-qualified residents can come once a month for food assistance. Colby couldn’t stress enough that they would never turn anyone away if there was
a need. In fact, Colby told me, “People should never hesitate if they need emergency assis- tance.”
