To resist the firebase and offense tactics of French militarist,
Vo-Nguyen-Giap did not tie up his troops to defend any
positions. With the help of the people, he used the guerrilla war
and harassment tactics to make French troops confusing in the
countryside. Therefore he should move his troops for hiding in
the villages then attacked on any hot points in suddenly that he
had planned before he drives his troops into the battle.
By the moving tactical Vietminh troops always were
principle parts for the battle, and French troops were always
remaining in the passive. They must take time to wait for
Vietminh coming to attack the firebase or open the large-scale
operation to look for Vietminh in the wide countryside.
General Giap was opening the Dong-Xuan (Winter and
Spring season) 1953-1954 operation in North Vietnam with the
full support of his allies. He used the full skill assault power of
304, 316SV, and 308 infantries to attack the most important
firebases in the Red River Delta, North Laos (Luang Prabang)
and Seno.
General Giap wanted to change the Vietminh position from
defense to attack his French opponents on the ground battles by
the people-sea offense tactical in the ratio of 3 even 4 to 1. He
expected his enemy would fall to the crisis, become worse by
lack the politician supporters in Paris and lost the Indochina
battle if he considered attacking French troops in constantly.
General Giap understood he would burn much more his
soldiers for each battle, but he knew he never gets the shortage
of the young people for the war, who were poor, workers and
French’s victims. Most those persons always carried the
nationalism in their blood and loved the country more than
themselves. If all the Vietminh leaders take a clever to cover up
their dirty actions, the young people will volunteer to be
Vietminh soldiers. They will continue struggling for
independence of the country by the call for reinforcing people of
