HAND AND POWER TOOL SAFETY
(5-100)
POWER TOOLS (5-100)
5-100 Use hand tools, power tools and similar equipment only for the
purpose and within the capacity for which they were intended and
designed.
5-101 Ensure power tool attachments are properly rated (rpm) for the power
tool being used.
5-102 All knives must be four inches or less and have locking type blades.
Fixed blade knives are prohibited. All razor type knives or box cutters
are prohibited unless they have a safety device that automatically
retracts or covers the blade to prevent accidental contact.
5-103 Do not toss or throw hand tools. Hand them or use a hand line.
5-104 Do not use defective or worn tools.
5-105 Do not carry hand or sharp tools in clothing. Use a tool belt or other
effective means.
5-106 Check for frayed electrical wiring.
5-107 Keep tools clean.
5-108 Be sure that electrical hand tools are double insulated or have a
ground prong. Use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). If not
used with a GFCI, ensure power tool has been tested and
documented for continuity.
5-109 Do not modify three prong plugs.
5-110 Do not operate any electrical tools or electric motors in the presence
of flammable gas or vapors unless the tools and motors are designed
for such application.
5-111 Do not use hand tools with the locking switch engaged. Circular saws
and chain saws shall not be equipped with devices which lock on
operating controls.
5-112 Make sure extension cords are in good condition and used for
temporary purposes only.
5-113 Avoid placing extension cords across walkways, doorways or
roadways where they may be damaged or become trip hazards.
5-114 Cover or guard power cables in vehicle traffic areas to keep from
running over them.
