7-111 Use beaker covers to prevent spattering when heating liquids on
a hot plate.
7-112 Keep work surfaces wiped clean because acids may cause
severe burns.
7-113 Do not use materials you are not familiar with. Ask your
supervisor for special safety guidelines for handling new
substances. Always reference product SDS (Safety Data Sheet)
and use all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Ensure all containers are properly labeled with the product name
and hazard warning. To obtain a product SDS from the 3E Fax
on Demand Service, call 1-800-451-8346. You must know your
location’s fax number to receive a SDS.
7-114 Ensure fumes/vapors are properly ventilated.
7-115 Make sure that all bottles in the Laboratory are labeled. If you
find a bottle that is unlabeled, notify your supervisor.
7-116 Properly dispose of the contents of all unlabeled containers or
unknown chemicals, or materials. If you are uncertain of proper
disposal, call the SHE Department.
7-117 Do not taste any chemical. Smell a chemical only when
necessary and then only by wafting a small amount of vapor with
your hand toward your nose.
7-118 Be knowledgeable and obey the safety rules of all other
departments and facilities.
7-119 Use a face shield and approved protective gloves when handling
hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids.
7-120 Thoroughly clean all empty chemical containers with water
before disposal. Do not use beakers for drinking beverages or
preparing food. Use laboratory equipment for laboratory
purposes only.
7-121 Where possible, store all agents used in the chemical lab in
break resistant containers (except for wash bottles).
7-122 When working around radiation-emitting devices, always wear
monitoring devices.
