10-147 Ensure tanks that may have contained flammables and
combustibles have been cleaned and purged with an inert gas
before welding or cutting begins. Follow policy regarding
welding or cutting on vessels and tanks that have previously
held flammable or combustible material.
10-148 You are always responsible for following the confined space
procedures when you are required to burn inside of tanks or a
confined space. In addition, be sure that you always have an
ample supply of fresh air. Be very careful to close the
oxygen/acetylene cylinder valve when the torch is not in use.
Remove the torch from the confined space.
10-149 Do not leave electrode holders and cable lying around. When
you have finished welding, wind up the cable on the machine.
10-150 Remove all welding rods from stingers when welders are not in
use.
10-151 Try to avoid stringing leads or hoses across walkways, stairs, or
“I” beams that create a hazard.
10-152 Do not carelessly discard the stub ends of electrodes. They
can ignite combustible materials and cause fires, cause painful
burns and create serious slip, trip and fall hazards.
10-153 Protect, shield or guard regulators on portable carts used/stored
in plant/shop areas.
10-154 Use flashback arrestors (reverse flow) on cutting torches.
Flashback arrestors are required on torch handle and at
oxygen/acetylene gauges.
