DROP OUT RATE REDUCTION PRACTICES FOR PARDO
(PUPILS AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT)
BRENDA C. CASTIGO
This study was conducted to determine the Drop out Reduction Practices for Pupils At
Risk of Dropping-Out (PARDO) from San Juan Elementary School, San Manuel District, Division
of Pangasinan II.
Specifically, this study aimed to find the profile of the respondents in terms of age,
gender, monthly income of the family, parents’ educational attainment, occupation of parents,
number of family members, favorite recreational activity, with whom the child is staying, number
of absences and tardiness, violations of school rules and regulations, participation in class
activities and submission of class requirements. This study also aimed to find the PARDO’s
academic profile such as: academic achievement rating, failing grade and back subjects. Medical/
Health Profile was also dealt with such as illness reported and nutritional status. Other reasons
was to find out the pupils’ causes of dropping out from San Juan Elementary School and the
proposed measures to address the problems of drop outs.
This study utilized the descriptive methods and used frequency, percentages and
weighted mean in treating the data. Number of cases were analyzed and evaluated in a narrative
form based from the data gathered and personal interview of the researcher.
This study also revealed that there are four major problems which need proposed
measures. They are family-related problems, community-related problems, and school- related
problems.
In view of the findings that family-related problems topped the rank of the causes of
dropping out, it is recommended that parents should be aware of the fact that they have a great
role in their children’s future. Henceforth, educators must help the parents to understand their
role for their children’s sake.
Since the findings shed light on the desired practices to be adopted by the elementary
grade teacher, it is recommended that teachers should constantly implement these practices
in dealing with PARDO with diversified personalities and capabilities. Emphasis in DORP (Drop
Out Reduction Practices) should require a thorough concern through the initiatives of the school
heads by means of constructive outlets geared towards the reduction of drop outs.
The problems must be addressed with valid approaches wherein partnership with
the teachers, parents, school heads, stake holders, local government units, non-government
organizations, and other national agencies should exist to deal holistically with the problems
of dropping out. In the same manner, policy makers should formulate ideas needed for similar
