IN THE USE OF MOTHER TONGUE
JOVELLE A. LAYOS
This study determined the problems encountered in the use of the Mother Tongue
by the Kindergarten teachers of Pozorrubio District and Sison District, Pangasinan Division II.
Specifically, it sought to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, civil
status, highest educational attainment, length of service and relevant trainings. Likewise, it
looked into the extent of the problems encountered by the teachers in the use of the mother
tongue along teacher factor, student factor, instructional materials / facilities and stakeholders
support, the significant difference in the extent of problems encountered by the teachers in the
used of the mother tongue across the profile variables and the relationship between the extent
of the problems encountered by the teachers in the use of the mother tongue and their profile
variables. The descriptive method of research was employed and the questionnaire checklist was
used in gathering the data. To address the problems in this study, the statistical measures were
used for data analysis and interpretations. These are the frequency counts (f) and percentage
(%) the average weighted means, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Pearson product
moment of coefficient correlation (r) were used.
Based on the analysis and interpretation of data, the following salient findings were
drawn: 1) majority of the respondent teachers belong to age bracket 20 – 30 years old that is
24 or 49 percent, female dominated, 46 – 93.9 percent, single 25 or 53.1 percent with MA units
30 or 61.2 percent, have 1 – 5 years of experience in teaching kindergarten that is 27 or 55.1
percent and attended 1 – 5 relevant trainings attended in the division level that is 28 or 57.1
percent. 2) the extent of the problems encountered in the use of the mother tongue obtained
an overall weighted mean of 3.19 denoting a moderately serious descriptive equivalent rating 3)
there are no significant differences in the extent of the problems encountered by the teachers in
the use of the mother tongue across the profile variables and 4) there is a significant relationship
found in the extent of problems encountered by the teachers in the use of the mother tongue
and the profile variable highest educational attainment.
In the light of the findings, the following conclusions were formulated 1) the respondent
teachers widely vary in their profile variables and at certain instances their variations are in
extreme cases and are distinctively female dominated group. 2) the respondent teachers
encountered problems in the mother tongue which are moderately serious along teacher factor,
