CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT
BRYEN JO L. DELA CRUZ
This study aimed to determine the extent of implementation of 5S Program in Urdaneta
District Hospital. It specifically sought to determine: the profile of the respondents in terms of
their age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, number of years in service, and area
of assignment, the extent of implementation of 5S program along sorting, systematize, sweeping,
standardize, and self-discipline, the significant difference in the implementation of 5S program
across the respondents profile variable, the problems encountered during implementation, and
what intervention measures could be proposed to improve the implementation of 5S program in
the delivery of health services. The researcher adopted the descriptive survey research design
since it aimed to determine the Implementation of 5S Program in Urdaneta District Hospital. The
respondents of the study were the forty (40) staff nurses employed in Urdaneta District Hospital
since they are the front line service providers and the key implementers of the 5S program.
Complete or total enumeration was employed as sampling scheme in choosing the total number
of respondents.
Based from the interpretation of data, the following were the findings obtained: 1)
There are about 17 (42.5 %) are under 21 – 25 age group, 21 (52.5%) are females, 23 (57.5%)
are married, 31 out 40 respondents (77.5%) had attained their Bachelors’ degree working as
staff nurses for 1 to 3 years (32.5%) and 8 of them (20%) are assigned in Emergency Room,
2) The respondents claimed that they have implemented the five (5) areas of the 5S program
namely sorting, systematizing, sweeping, standardizing and sustaining with average weighted
means of 4.06, 4.05, 3.87, 4.02, and 4.50 respectively, 3) There is no significant difference in the
implementation of 5S program in term of age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment,
number of years in service, and area of assignment with a corresponding significant value of
0.812, 0.520, 0.520, 350, 0.787, and 0.299 respectively, and 4) The respondents perceived that
the problems they encounter in the implementation of the 5S program are slightly serious with
an average weighted mean of 1.99, 2.15, 1.92, 2.15, and 1.94 respectively.
Based from the findings, the following conclusion were: 1) Majority of the respondents
are aged 21 – 25 years old, females, married, had bachelors’ degree, employed as staff nurses
assigned in the Emergency room for 1 – 3 years, 2) The respondents claimed that they have
implemented the five (5) areas of the 5S program namely sorting, systematizing, sweeping,
standardizing and sustaining with average weighted means of 4.06, 4.05, 3.87, 4.02, and 4.50
respectively 3) There is no significant difference in the implementation of 5S program across
profile variables, and 4) The respondents perceived that the problems they encounter in the
implementation of the 5S program are slightly serious.
Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are suggested:
1) The top management of the hospital can devise a monitoring and evaluation tool to effectively
evaluate the 5S implementation 2) Additional materials can be devised to increase the awareness
