Sir Robert Shirley bad arrived previously with a commission

Robort Shirley as an imposter.
§277 . Conrt minute? of the Fast Tho King had resolved to sond Sir Robert Shirley with Sir
India Companv, 10th March Dodmarc Cotton to Persia at the expense of the Com
1626. pany, ns great danger was apprehonded to their interests
in Persia and as Sir Robort was greatly exasperated on
account of the treatment he bad met with from Nukud
Beg, attributed by him to the incitement of the Company.
The Court petitions the King not to send Sir Robert Shirley
on tho proposed mission and not to qualify him in any sort.
Ditto Ditto 13th March 1626 . The King answers that this resolution is constant to send Sir
Robort to Persia “ for ho coming to England a6 an Ambas
sador and being received by His Majesty in that condition,
he conceives lesser favour cannot be afforded him than to
return him thither to clear his honour." The Company
would have to bear only tho charge of his passage.
§ 280 . Court minute? of the Ea*t The Court resolves to undertake to pay none of Sir Robert’s debts,
India Company, 24th March but only to transport him, his wifo and servants to Persia.
1626. The King had resolved to send Cotton as Ambassador with
Sir Robert. The Court does not wish to undertake expendi
ture of an A mba-Kador, but would undertake to carry him
as a private gentleman.
§ 294 . Court minutes of the East Negotiations with the famous Persian merchant, who has
India Companv, 10th April brought large quantities of silk for sale in England. He
1626. maintains his independent right to deal with the silk
without reference to the Persian Ambassador. While the
Court tells bim that Mr. Cotton was to be sent as King’s
Ambassador, but that the Company had no intention to
employ him, and had entertained one Mr. Burt, who bad
ample powers to conduct their business.

however, contended that instead of servioes, they had
experienced only injuries from Sir Robert 8herley. Sir
Robert then requested the Privy Council for permission to
return to Persia, stating that in that country he would
discharge his duty to his new Sovereign (King of Persia),
without forgetting his obligation to his natural Sovereign
(King of England).

§ 673 . President Thomas Kerridgo, Sir Dadmure Cotton arrived at Swally Road with Sir Robert

January 1628. merchant a few days later. The late coming of the fleet
prevented the ambassador from going to Surat. He left in
the William for Persia, leaving Sir Robert Shirley in the
iSfur. Four ships (the Exchange, Star William, Hart)
sent from Swally Road to Persia, which carried nearly 900
