Phone Screen Questions
General Questions
1. Why are you interested in the DOA opportunity with Vallejo Flood & Wastewater? Why are you actively or
passively looking for a new position?
It was interesting because it was a special district, I've worked for special districts and municipalities, and I find
that I enjoy working for special districts. The reason that I am actively looking for employment. I have worked for
two special districts, about a year ago I moved to Florida. I'm looking for another opportunity. I am with the City
of Sunnyvale right now. I like it but I don't feel like it is the right fit for me professionally. Feels that the City of
Sunnyvale is too large, feel that the Clerk's role is not as respected or utilized as it should be.
Position Specific Questions
2. Please describe your highest level administrative support role to an Executive, Director, General Manager
and/or Board.
Clerk of the Board/Assistant to the Fire Chief with Menlo Park Fire Protection District. I was responsible for
agenda, FPPC requirements. I provided administrative support on all levels from drafting reports to the Board,
planning events, a whole range of executive assistant work for the Fire Chief. I was very involved in the day to day
operations with the Fire District, with what ever tasks the Fire Chief had at the time.
Previous to that with Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District I was an assistant to the General Manager.
Similar to what I did with the Fire District.
3. Please describe your supervisory experience and the most challenging human resources issue you have
addressed.
In Menlo Park we were small, I did not have staff to supervise. I supervised a deputy/office assistant for about
two years and then they reclassified that position and it was taken out of my supervisory role. I am responsible
for the Senior Office Assistant. I am currently working on an issue with performance, attendance, and tardiness,
and a history of work quality. I am in the level of not necessarily at the point of reprimand, but more in the
coaching to understand what issues she is having with her tardiness and how we can adjust that and then also
trying to identify what tools she needs to help with her work performance. There seems to be an overarching
theme throughout the years under different supervisors. I want to see what it is that she is lacking - are there
certain tasks that she has been given that she shouldn't be given.
4. Please describe your experience in coordinating, tracking and reporting out on the implementation of
organizational goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
With Menlo Park Fire Protection District we were rolling out our records retention schedule. It was a coordinated
effort of informing everyone, identifying which records we have, and then identifying which records to be
destroyed and then ensuring that the records would become electronic. The first step was notifying the people
involved that this is what was approved by the Board. This is what the timelines are, and then identifying what
