of death on the cross in His own body, cleansed me from my sin by His blood and I
have asked Him to come into my life and be my Lord and Saviour”. To have true
    saving faith you must:

     • be humble and genuinely sorry for your sin and confess you are lost and dead
       in sin.
     • repent - turn from sin and turn to God through the Lord Jesus Christ for
       salvation and deliverance.
     • acknowledge that nothing can take sin from you or cleanse you from sin other
       than the Lord Jesus Christ.
     • acknowledge that only Jesus Christ is the loving creator, Saviour and powerful
       Lord of heaven and earth.
     • believe in the Lord Jesus Christ - accept that He took the punishment for your
sin by shedding His blood and giving His life for you on the cross and by rising
again from the dead is able to give you new eternal life.
     • receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith - ask Him to come into your life and be
       your personal Saviour and Lord.

    What is it to perish?

While we remain in sin we are separated from God we are under His judgement
now and will be judged later when we die. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands
of the living God (Hebrews 10:31). We are not to fear those who kill the body, but
are not able to kill the soul - but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul
and body in hell (Matthew 10:28). In Zephaniah 1:17 we read “I will bring distress
on men so that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the
Lord; and their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.” This
describes what it is like to be in a state of perishing not only physically but
spiritually also. While our physical flesh will turn back to dust we are also spiritual
beings with a spirit (or soul) that lives after death. Therefore Luke 12:5 quotes the
Lord Jesus as saying “Fear Him who, after your body has been killed, has authority
to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him.”

While we are separated from God we are spiritually dead. Ephesians 2:1-5 tells us
that before we are saved we are spiritually dead because of sin - following the
world's evil way; obeying the ruler of the spiritual powers in the spiritual world, the
spirit who now controls the people who disobey God - all of us and in our natural
                                                                      10
