condition were destined to suffer God's anger. But God's mercy is so abundant,
and his love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in sin He brought
us to life with Christ. That is why John 3:7 tells us we must be born again spiritually
to be saved. And John 4:24 tells us that God is Spirit, and his worshipers must
worship in the Spirit and in truth.
Those who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus will
suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord
and from the glory of his might (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9). Teaching on the eternal
suffering of hell Jesus described it this way - “... if your hand causes you to sin, cut it
off - it is better for you live maimed than with two hands to go into the fire of hell.”
(Mark 9:43). We can give thanks to God though for His love - while the wages of
sin is death, the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans
6:23).
What is eternal Life?
Being created in Gods image we are spiritual beings for we are told that God is
Spirit (John 4:24). The Bible tells us we have a spirit that will live for ever -
"Remember your Creator now while you are young - before the silver cord of life
snaps and the gold bowl is broken; before the pitcher is broken at the
fountain...then the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God
who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12:6-7). In John 5:24 we are told that we must hear
God’s Word and believe that God sent the Lord Jesus Christ. If we believe in the
Lord Jesus Christ and receive Him by faith we will have eternal life and will not be
judged because we have crossed over from death to life. In 1 Peter 1: 5 eternal life
is described as a rich inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not
fade away, reserved in heaven. In Hebrews 10:35 it is an enduring possession for
you in heaven. It is eternal relationship with God - “For I am sure that neither
death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor
powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39). And
this is the testimony that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not
have life (1 John 5:12-13).
