           21. Estimation of Free Fatty Acid in

                 Animal Protein Sources




           SCOPE
           To estimate the free fatty acid (FFA) in Meat and Bone
           meal and Fishmeal.


           PRINCIPLE
           Most lipids undergo hydrolysis liberating free fatty acid
           resulting in hydrolytic rancidity. A known amount of the

           sample is dissolved in ethyl alcohol and titrated against
           standard  sodium  hydroxide  solution  using
           Phenolphthalein  as  indicator.  The  result  gives  the
           extent of hydrolytic rancidity that has taken place in
           given sample.

           FAnalytical  Balance,  1  mg  /  0.1  mg  accuracy
