31. Estimation of Impurities
o
minutes at temperature of 105 C.
SCOPE
To estimate the Impurities in oil and fat. 2. After 15 minutes, Take off glass beaker from the hot
air oven and cool in a desiccator for 30 minutes.
Weigh empty filter paper (A).
APPARATUS
FAnalytical Balance, 1mg / 0.1mg accuracy
3. Weigh 5gm of given oil sample in a glass beaker(c).
FHot Air Oven (pre calibrated)
4. Dissolve 10 ml of petroleum ether in the oil sample
FGlass Beaker, 25ml, 50ml and transfer through already dried, weighed filter
paper which is present in glass funnel.
FGlass rod
5. Wash the filter paper and 25ml glass beaker with
FGlass funnel, 70mm diameter 150ml of petroleum ether by using 50ml glass
beaker. All the oil is dissolved in petroleum ether
FFilter Paper 615A
and impurities only present in the filter paper.
FBoiling Flask, 250ml
6. The filter paper with impurities inserted into same
50ml glass beaker and dried in the hot air oven for
REAGENTS
o
30minutes at temperature of 105 C.
o
o
FPetroleum ether 60 C - 80 C, AR grade
7. After 30minutes, take off glass beaker from the hot
air oven and cool in a desiccator for 30minutes.
PROCEDURE
1. Take fluted filter paper 615A and it is inserted into Weigh the filter paper (B).
50ml glass beaker. Dry it in hot air oven for 15
CALCULATION
(B - A)
Impurities % = -------------------------------- X 100
C
Where, A = Weight of empty filter paper
B = Weight of filter paper after removal of impurities
C = Sample weight
