Abstrak: Gathering people together in prayer during demonstrations, mosques
were also used to spread the message of reform through sermons, ushering in
new supporters and encouraging them to continue their involvement in the
opposition movements, reinforcing and affirming their ideological commitment.
Observers have characterized the Arab Spring as a watershed moment in the
relationship between religion and politics in Tunisia. Narratives abound about
protesters walking from Friday prayers to central squares in order to demand the
removal of the regime, motivated by the sermons heard at their mosques.
Fridays frequently became “days of rage” in Tunisia because of the convenience
of organizing would be protesters during Friday prayers. The Friday sermon no
longer promises to provide peace and comfort to all people. The values of
brotherhood, pluralism, tolerance, and multiculturalism are avoided, it is
precisely what is conveyed is hatred. Likewise, mosques themselves are often
said to have served as organizational hubs for protest. Mosques—functioned as
a locus of anti-government agitation for demonstration (the “mosque-to-square”
narrative). This paper explains the content of Friday sermon prepared by Rached
Ghannoushi—a founder and activist of al-Nahdhah (one of the most influential
parties in Islamic discourse before and after Arab Spring through the pulpit of
the mosques on Fridays). This article, therefore, intends to discover what kind of
Friday sermon prepared by Ghannouchi throughout the year 2012-2013. This
research is based on the al-Minbar (the Friday sermon texts that have been
compiled by Rached Ghannoushi’s permission). The main focus of this study is
to emphasize the significances of the Friday sermon as a prime vehicle for
                 disseminating Islamic understanding of multiculturalism.
