Each to prove his merit and repute
In giving his hand in matrimony
To the moon, whom to give her testimony
Did both implore to give an impartial ear
To their claims to her hand told here.
The cloud, so he said, was the emperor
Of the vast skies with many a treasure;
Twinkling diamonds he would bedeck
That would glitter on her graceful neck!
To this, the wave with pride, replied:
He was the lord of the deep oceanthat did hide
“Many a pearl of purest ray serene”
Fairer than a princess to adorn her mien.
At this, the moon did withdraw
To her home beyond western hill:it was dawn;
The wave lay quiet lingering ashore,
The cloud sailed silently o’er!
