ST-18 Steering system- Steering Mechanism

k. Remove the upper snap ring from the intermediate
steering shaft.

l. Turn the steering column assembly upside down and
hold the steering column with both hands. Then knock its
upper end against a wooden slab gently to separate the
intermediate steering shaft from the steering column.

m. Remove the intermediate steering shaft.

n. Punch out the upper bearing of the intermediate
steering shaft from the lower part of the steering column.

o. Remove the snap ring for the lower bearing of the
intermediate steering shaft.

p. Punch out the lower bearing of the intermediate
steering shaft.

6. Checking the steering column and intermediate
steering shaft

a. Place the intermediate steering shaft that has been
removed on two V-blocks. Put the probe of the dial gauge
onto the surface at the middle of the intermediate steering
shaft. Perform zero point calibration of the gauge pointer.
Rotate the intermediate steering shaft to check if it is
bent. If the radial runout exceeds the limit, straighten or

replace the intermediate steering shaft.
