                 to a flock of sheep that is dear to its owner  Ö í−ÓñÖ¼ÐañÔ¼íÖë−ÌëÎìÔíöêÒ®Ðñ
                           that was struck by a plague.  ,þÓëÓcdÖañÔõÖòÓL                                             through counting  ,öÖ−ÐòÌô−ÑðÐ−ñÔ¼
          Once it (the plague) ceased, he said to the shepherd,  ,íÓ¼BþÖñBñþÔôÖêšÔ½ÖtÓMÌôe   for they were counted after the mishkon was erected.  ,öÖkÐLÌnÔíóÔšeíÓMÌôöÖêÖòÐnÓL
                          “I ask of you, count my sheep  −ÌòêÒ®³ÓêíÑòÐô,EÐnÌôíÖLÖwÔëÐa                    It is the counting that is spoken of  þeôÖêÖíöÖ−ÐòÌnÔí êeí
              so that you know how many of them are left.”  ,óÓíÖëeþгBò íÖnÔk¼ÔðÐî              at the start of the book of Numbers (Bamidbar):  ,ó−ÌðešÐtÔíLÔneì ³ÔlÌìгÌa
                   [He did this] in order to make it known  Ô ¼−ÌðBíÐñ                                 “[God spoke to Moshe] on the first day  ðÖìÓêÐa
                  that it (i.e., the flock) was dear to him. 25  .î−ÖñÖ¼íÖë−ÌëÎìê−ÌíÓL              of the second month, in the second year,” 19  ,³−ÌòÑMÔííÖòÖMÔa−ÌòÑMÔíLÓðÒìÔñ

                  in the book of Numbers (i.e., Bamidbar),  ,ó−ÌðešÐtÔíLÔneìÐa                                           for each year.  ,íÖòÖLÐîíÖòÖLñÖkñÓL
                          for regarding that one it says:  ,Ba þÔôÍêÓò−ÑþÎíÓL                    Both were considered alike regarding them— 20  óÓíÖëeîÐLeíÐî
                   “on the first day of the second month,” 26  ,−ÌòÑMÔíLÓðÒìÔñðÖìÓ êÐa                             the poor and the rich.  ,ó−Ìþ−ÌLμÔîó−ÌiÌòμ
                        whereas the mishkon was erected  óÔšeí öÖkÐLÌnÔíÐî                          It is regarding this [last] terumah-offering 21  íÖôeþÐzdÖ³Bê ñÔ ¼Ðî
                       on the first day of the first month,  ,öBLêÌþÖíLÓðÒìÔñðÖìÓêÐa                   that it is said: “to atone for your souls,”  ,óÓí−ѳÒLÐõÔòñÔ¼þÑtÔ×ÐñþÔôÍêÓò
                                       as it is said:  þÔôÍêÓpÓL                              because the [purpose of the] korbonos is atonement.  ;ó−ÌêÖaóÑííÖþÖtÔ×Ðñ ³BòÖaÐþÖwÔíÓL
                      “On the first day of the first month  LÓðÒìÔñðÖìÓêÐa öBLêÌþÖíLÓðÒìÔí óB−Ða
                      you shall erect, etc. [the mishkon]” 27  ,’BèÐîó−ÌšÖz                                       And the third [’í ³ÔôeþÐz]  ³−ÌL−ÌñÐMÔíÐî
                      and from this count [in this section]  íÓfÔíöÖ−ÐòÌnÔíÑôe                         is the terumah-offering for the mishkon,  ,öÖkÐLÌnÔí³Ôôeþгê−Ìí
                 the sockets were made from its shekalim, 28  ,BlÓL ó−ÌñÖšÐMÌô ,ó−ÌòÖðÎêÖíeNμÔò                          as it is said:  þÔôÍêÓpÓLBôÐk
                                       as it states:  þÔôÍêÓpÓL                                                  “everyone who set aside  ó−ÌþÑôñÖk
                “the one hundred kikar [of silver] were used  ¹Ó½ÓkÔíþÔkÌk³ÔêÐô−ÌíÐ−Ôî               a terumah-offering of silver and copper.” 22  ,³ÓLìÐòe ¹Ó½Ók³ÔôeþÐz

       Thus you learn that they were two [separate countings],  ,e−ÖíóÌ−ÔzÐLÖzÐðÔôÖñêÖí                                       rather,  êÖlÓê
                     one at the start of their contribution  öÖ³ÖëÐðÌò³ÔlÌìгÌa³ÔìÔ ê          each person contributed as his heart moved him. 23  :BaÌñBëÖðÐpÓMíÔôL−Ìê

                                                                                                           that he (Moshe) was commanded  íÖeԬЮÌpÓL
                        Should you ask: but is it possible  þÖLÐõÓê−Ì×ÐîþÔôêÒzóÌêÐî                                     to count them  óÖ³BòÐôÌñ
            that at both [countings] the [number of] Israelites  ñÑêÖþÐNÌ−e−ÖíóÓí−ÑòÐLÌaÓL        when they began to contribute to the mishkon,  ,öÖkÐLÌnÔí³ÔëÐðÌò³ÔlÌìгÌa
                                was exactly the same,  Zó−ÌîÖL                                        after the occurrence of the [golden] calf  ,ñÓèѼÖííÑNμÔôþÔìÔê
