 see after the well-being of your brothers, ·E−¶ÓìÔêóB¥ñÐL-³Óêí‚ÑêÐþ  they stripped him of his coat, B flzÐòÖzŠk-³Ó극ѽB−-³Óê e¬−¥ÌLÐõÔiÔî
 and the welfare of the sheep, öê flÒvÔíóB¤ñÐL-³ÓêÐî  the long, colorful coat that he had on. :î−ÞÖñÖ¼þ'ÓLÎêó−£ÌqÔtÔí³Óò'Ò³Ðk-³Óê
 and bring me a report.” þ¢ÖëÖc−Ìò£ÑëÌLÎíÞÔî  24. They took him and threw him into the pit. íÖþ¢ÒaÔíB£³Òêe×'ÌñÐLÔiÔîeí flŠìÖw¶ÌiÔî .ð×
 He sent [Yoseif] from the depths of Chevron, öB flþÐëÓìšÓô¤Ñ¼Ñô·eí¶ÑìÖñÐLÌiÔî  The pit was empty; there was no water in it. :óÌ−ÞÖôB£aö−'Ñêš flÑþþB¤aÔíÐî
 and he came to Shechem. :íÖôÞÓ×ÐLê£ÒëÖiÔî  25. They sat down to eat bread. ›óÓì›Óñ-ñÖ×ÍêÞÓñ ‡eëÐLÞÑiÔî .í×
 15. A man found him going astray in the field. í¢ÓðÖOÔaí£Ó¼Ò³í'ÑpÌíÐîL− flÌêeí¤ÑêÖ®ÐôÌiÔ î .î¬  They raised their eyes and saw,— e flêÐþÌiÔî·óÓí−Ñò−ÞѼe¥êÐNÌiÔî
 The man asked him, “What are you seeking?” :L ÞÑwÔëÐz-íÔôþ £ÒôêÑñL−§ÌêÖíeí«ÑñÖêÐLÌiÔî  behold a Yishmaelite caravan was coming from Gilod. ð¢Ö¼ÐñÌbÌôí£ÖêÖaó− flÌñêѼÐôÐLÌ−³¤ÔìÐþ ÞÒê·íÑpÌíÐî

 [14] From the depths of Chevron.  .ïBøÀáÆç÷ÆîÅòÅî [ãé]  The long, colorful coat.  .íéÄqÇtÇäúÆðÉúÀkúÆà
 But, is not Chevron on a mountain,  ,þÖíÖa öBþÐëÓìêGÎíÔî  This is an additional one that his father gave him  î−ÌëÖêBñ¹−̽BíÓL êeí
 as it is said: “They went up to the South  ëÓèÓpÔaeñμÔiÔî:þÔôÍêÓpÓL  in excess of what was given to the brothers.  :î−ÖìÓêñÔ¼þѳB−

 But, [“depth” refers to] the deep wisdom  íÖweôμí֮ѼÑôêÖlÓê  From the statement: “The pit was empty”  ,šÑþ þBaÔíÐîþÔôÍêÓpÓL¼ÖôÐLÔnÌô
 of that righteous man [Avraham] buried in Chevron—  ,öBþÐëÓìÐa þeëÖwÔíš−ÌcÔ® B³Bê ñÓL  don’t I know that there was no water in it?  ,óÌ−ÔôBaö−ÑêÓLÔ¼ÑðB− −Ìò−Ñê
 to fulfill what was said to Avraham  óÖíÖþÐëÔêÐñþÔôÍêÓpÓMíÔôó−ÑiÔšÐñ  Then what does “There was no water” come to teach?  ?óÌ−ÖôBaö−ÑêþÔôBñ ðeôÐñÔzíÔô
 at the Covenant of the Split Pieces  :ó−ÌþÖ³ÐaÔíö−Ña  [It teaches] there was no water in it  ,Ba ö−ÑêóÌ−Ôô

 It is a place with a predisposition to misfortunes.  :³eòÖ¼ÐþeõÐñöÖ×eô óBšÖô  As Onkelos translates it: “A caravan of”  ,³ÔþÖ−ÐL :BôebÐþÔ³Ðk
 There the Tribes sinned. [They sold Yoseif].  ,ó−̬ÖëÐMÔíeñКÐñÌšóÖL  [It is called ³ÔìÐþÕê] because they travel the road [ìÔþÕê].  :ìÔþBê −Ñ×ÐñBí óÑLñÔ¼
 There they abused Dinah. 39  ,íÖò−Ìc³Óêep̼óÖL  Their camels were carrying, etc.  .'åâå íéÄàÀNÉðíÆäéÅlÇîÀâe

 [15] A man found him. 41  .LéÄàeäÅàÈöÀîÄiÇå [åè]  Because it is unusual for Arabs to carry anything, but  êÖlÓê³êÑNÖñó−ÌiÌëÐþÔ¼ñÓLöÖkÐþÔcö−ÑêÓL
 This refers to [the angel] Gavriel,  ,ñÑê−ÌþÐëÔbíÓï  naphta and itran whose odor is foul.  ,¼ÔþöÖì−ÑþÓL,öÖþЬ̼ÐîЬÐõÑò
 as it is said: “The man [L−ÌêÖíÐî] Gavriel.” 42  :ñÑê−ÌþÐëÔbL−ÌêÖíÐî:þÔôÍêÓpÓL  But for this one [Yoseif] it was arranged  eòÐnÔcÐïÌòíÓïÖñÐî
                [that they be carrying] good smelling spices  ,ó−ÌôÖNÐë
 36  Bamid. 13, 22. Then why is it stated that Yaakov sent him from the depths of Chevron?  37  Above 15, 13. Yaakov  so that he not be harmed by the foul odor.  :¼ÖþÔì−ÑþÑô šBfÌ−êHÓL
 sent Yoseif into this dangerous situation because he knew that this would augur the fulfillment of the Covenant.  .úàÉëÀð
 38  We are already aware that his brothers were in Shechem. (v. 11). Then why does it not state simply, “And he  Spices.
 came there”?  39  Above, chapter 34.  40  II Divrei Hayamim 11, 1. Rechavom was the first of the breakaway kings.  Any collection of many types of spices is called ³êÕ×Ðò.  ,³êÒ×Ðò −eþÖšíÑaÐþÔ íó−ÌôÖNÐë−ѽepÌkñÖk
 41  What is the significance of Yoseif’s being lost? Also, if this were an ordinary man, why would Yoseif simply say  Similarly, “He showed them the entire house of íÕ³B×Ðò.” 50  ,íÒ³Ò×Ðò³−ÑañÖk³ÓêóÑêÐþÔiÔî:öÑ×Ðî
 to him, (v. 16) “Tell me, where are they pasturing?” Should he not first ask whether he knows of his brothers’
 whereabouts?
