on that day, í†ÓfÔíóB¤iÔa 9. This is the history of Noach. ÔìflÕò³¤ÒðÐñB ÞzíÓlÑêƒ.¬
all the wellsprings of the great deep, burst open, í flÖaÔþóB¤íÐz·³BòÐ−мÔô-ñÖk·e¼ÐšÐëÌò Noach was a righteous man, š−§ÌcÔ®L−'ÌêÔì†Õò

And further on it states: “And the Flood was”? 75 ?ñeaÔnÔí−ÌíÐ−Ôî:þÑôBê êeí öÖlÔíÐñe There are those among our Sages eò−ѳBaÔþÑôLÑ−
But, [it should be explained thus:] êÖlÓê who infer from it to his praise. 6 :ìÔëÓLÐñ B³Bê ó−ÌLÐþBð
When He [God] brought them [flood waters] down öÖð−ÌþBíÓLÐ× Certainly, had he lived in a righteous generation ó−Ìš−ÌcÔ® þBðÐëíÖ−ÖíelÌêöÑkÓLñÖk
He [first] brought them down mercifully ,ó−ÌôÎìÔþÐaöÖð−ÌþBí he would have been [even] more righteous. .þѳB− š−ÌcÔ®íÖ−Öí
so that if they repent eþÐïÐìÔ−óÌêÓL There are others who infer from it to his discredit. 7 :−êÔòÐbÌñ B³Bê ó−ÌLÐþBcÓLLÑ−Ðî
they would yet be rains of blessing. ,íÖ×ÖþÐa−ÑôÐLÌèe−ÐíÌ− Relative to his generation he was righteous, ,š−ÌcÔ®íÖ−Öí BþBð −ÌõÐñ
And when they did not repent eþÐïÖìêHÓLÐke but had he lived in the generation of Avraham óÖíÖ þÐëÔêñÓL BþBðÐaíÖ−ÖíelÌêÐî
they became flood waters. 76 :ñeaÔnÔñe−Öí he would not have been considered significant. 8 :óeñÐ×ÌñëÖLÐìÓòíÖ−ÖíêG

The first day is not included in this number ,öÖ−ÐòÌnÔíöÌô öBLêÌþ óB− ö−Ñê Whereas, concerning Avraham [Scripture] says: :þÑôBê êeí óÖíÖþÐëÔêÐëe
because its night 77 was not included with it, ,Bn̼ Bñ−Ññö−ÑêÓL−ÌõÐñ [“God,] before whom I walked.” 9 ?î−ÖòÖõÐñ−ÌzÐ×ÔlÔíгÌíþÓLÎê
for it is written: [v. 11] “On that day íÓfÔí óBiÔaë−̳Ð×−ÑþÎíÓL [This is because] Noach required [God’s] support ðÔ¼Ô½C−ÌþÖ®íÖ−ÖíÔìÒò
all the wellsprings . . . burst open.” 78 ,³BòÐ−мÔôñÖke¼ÐšÐëÌò to uphold him [in his righteousness] ,B×ÐôÖ³Ðñ
Consequently, the forty days ended ó−ÌñÖk óB− ó−̼ÖaÐþÔêeêЮÐôÌò whereas, Avraham drew strength from within himself šÑfÔìгÌôíÖ−ÖíóÖíÖþÐëÔêñÖëÎê
