Meteorology
The TAF code is structured like the METAR code, but only wind, MET visibility,
weather and clouds, as well as changes to these are included. That is, there is
no QNH or temperature.
Ex:
ekka 250840z 250918 16005kt 2500 br bkn006 becmg 0910 16012kt 9999 nsw sct025 tempo 1011
6000 bkn008
NSW, NSC, CAVOK, BECMG, TEMPO and FM are according to the same criteria
as for METAR and TREND.
In TAF, a designation called PROB is used followed by either 30 or 40. These
numbers indicate the percentage probability of an alternative value of a
predicted element.
If the values in a TAF turn out not to be valid, a TAF AMD is issued, which is a
corrected TAF or a TAF COR, which is a TAF with corrections.
3.11.5.9 SNOWTAM
You may have come across the term NOTAM elsewhere in this compendium.
NOTAM is a general term for all aviation-related announcements that can cover
both safety and operational matters.
SNOWTAM (Snow and Ice Report) is a specific type of NOTAM that focuses on
informing about snow, ice and winter conditions that may affect flight safety at
or near airports.
SNOWTAM reports contain information about:
- The amount of snow or ice on runways and taxiways
- Conditions such as sleet, freezing rain, or snowplow work
- Weather conditions that may affect flight safety, such as slippery
runways or limited visibility due to snow or fog
- Information about areas of the airport that may be obstructed by winter
conditions
