Later on, things advanced and my husband and friends went
on hunger strike. Their situation also started to affect me. What
affected me was other friends eating while the hunger strikers
gazed at them. The gaze was so effective that the bread and olives
almost stuck to their palates. My husband did not say a great deal
about the actions and I started going to them regularly to see what
was going on. During this time Gezi was reaching its height and I
often went with Kaya to Taksim. I found them at the foot of the
monument and I was pleased to see Kaya at the arena of struggle.
In that period, I knew a lot of the people in the square and there
were a lot of lawyers and high level people and I was pleased to
see that they were helping us.
What changes did these events make to your lives?
Serpil Donmez: I experienced a great many things for the
first time. For example, the Grup Yorum Independent Turkey con-
cert – I appeared on the stage. It was not easy to appear on stage
but I was very excited. We were wearing black trousers and white
shirts. My knees were shaking as it was not easy to appear in front
of 500,000 people. My neighbours were among the spectators. I
got a good reception when we got home. Everyone congratulated
me.
Finally, do you want to say something about the resistance?
Serpil Donmez: In resistance, the most important is family
support. Because a human being with his family behind him or
her has great strength and can stay upright in every kind of resist-
ance and wage a fearless struggle. My husband gave a very great
example in the resistance and I was proud of him and always be-
