had left it to the trade union, we would have come unstuck. There
is really no trade union in Turkey. If there were one, it would have
shown solidarity and given support even if we were not here.
Y: How did it make you feel when you first produced some-
thing?
Yasar Gulay: To produce something through your own labour
and then exhibit it to the people to sell it gives you a great feeling
of honour and pride. We are producing for ourselves and we are
selling them for ourselves. All machines are in our hands: at the
moment we are not giving money for electricity and water, we do
not have rent but we will in the future. There are problems to con-
tend with, for example there is someone ill at home, I am not
bringing them to the hospital as I have decided that I will not leave
here for two, three or four days. Our house is here from now on.
Even if you go home your mind stays here. I wonder what will hap-
pen and how it will end? Our house has been here from now on.
Of course, you labour and we produce things. However much we
earn, in future we will know how to share with our friends. There
is no boss to say anything, we have no boss. The boss is a parasite
in my view. Just a puppet putting his money to work.
Y: Your resistance has given the working class strength and
morale. What do you think on this subject?
Yasar Gulay: We may be an example to other workers but we
reproach other workers a little bit. For not being at our side… Just
about 50% of Turkey is working class. It would be unbelievable if
they were to put their backs into it. If they gave support. You see
the whole working class here. Before the occupation, they all
