At half past three in the afternoon they came to Calik Hold-
ing in Zincirlikuyu and opened a banner with the inscription “We
will not let the bosses of Kazova Textiles, Umit Somuncu and Mustafa
Umut Somuncu, take away our rights” and marched to the company
chanting the slogan “We don’t want charity, we want our rights, we
will not let Gaye Somuncu take away our rights, long live our Kazova re-
sistance”.
This is from the press statement that was read out:
“The reason we are here today is that Gaye Somuncu, the daughter
our boss Umit Somuncu, works here. We have spoken on several occasions
by phone and once face to face but since no concrete steps have been taken
we are here once again. Since you claim to be on the side of the oppressed,
take the side now of workers whose rights have been taken away, and
show us the sensitivity you have shown for years by standing up and op-
posing your father and older brother. At our previous meeting you said ‘I
do not talk to my family. if you come here next week I will not be here. I
am resigning.’ If you are on the side of justice, doing this will be running
away. Human beings ‘devoted to life and things they believe in’ face up
to every difficulty. If they are sincere, of course. This is why wherever you
go you will not be able to break loose and will be found wherever you go
as we place you in the same category as your father and older brother. We
will continue our actions until we get our rights” it said.
After the statement there was a sit-down protest lasting half
an hour. During this passing cars sounded their horns and there
was applause for the workers. The action was ended after an an-
nouncement that it would be repeated next week at the same hour.
