If the store has “call-back” abilities on the phone, use this feature to determine where the call came from.
Immediately write the details on the “Bomb Threat Checklist” while they are fresh.
Call 911.
Call your ROD/ROM.
The ROD/ROM will contact the Crisis Hotline and the Crisis Team will be activated. The Crisis Team will
provide direction and the appropriate next steps.
EVACUATION AND SEARCH
Gather Team Members together and explain that a threat has been received and explain the actions being
taken, which will include searching the store and may include evacuating the building. Stress the
importance of remaining calm.
Several factors will determine if the store is evacuated:
The specifics of the threat and if any suspicious items have been located
The time remaining before the alleged detonation
Direction given by local law enforcement
Recent events such as labor trouble, Team Member issues, recent religious/racial tension, etc.
Review and familiarize yourself with the “Evacuating the Store” section of the Crisis and Emergency
Management Guide – Manager Version prior to a real emergency occurring. If you evacuate, it will usually
take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours to receive the “all clear” to return to the building. The
recommended minimum distance for evacuation is two blocks for a bomb threat.
If safe to do so, assign people to search specific areas of the store. Searchers should be instructed to not
move or touch any suspicious items, backpacks, packages, etc. The position of the item should be noted
and communicated to law enforcement upon their arrival. If a suspicious package is found, immediately
evacuate the building.

The package resembles a bomb or its location is inappropriate; e.g., under a table or behind a door.
The package does not belong or is out of place.
The origin of the package is questionable or cannot be readily determined.
The physical characteristics of the package are suspicious in size, shape, weight or audibility.
