HAZARDOUS INCIDENT
In addition to the steps listed above, the following should also be followed in the event of a hazardous incident:
Seal all windows, doors and vents with plastic sheeting and duct tape.
Quickly close air vents.
Have Team Members assist with turning off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems. Some systems
automatically provide for exchange of inside air with outside air. These systems, in particular, need to be
turned off, sealed or disabled.
Gather additional supplies for your Emergency Supply Kit including duct tape, plastic sheeting and plastic
garbage bags.
PICKETING
Reasons for demonstrations or picketing are numerous (political, gang violence, racial discrimination,
nutrition, employment, etc.), but the procedures for dealing with this type of situation are usually the same.
Utilize the following guidelines for handling any form of protest at your store.
If at any time a public demonstration becomes violent, immediately implement your shelter-in-place/lockdown
procedures.
Picketing – DO
Assess the situation. Get the facts (e.g., obtain copies of fliers, etc.). Locate the lead organizer,
introduce yourself and ask the organizer the purpose of the picketing.
Contact your ROD/ROM.
Conduct business as usual and make extra efforts to keep your Guests and Team Members calm.
Answer any Guests’ questions (about the demonstration) politely and away from other Guests.
Politely inform the demonstrators that they must confine their activities to public property (if they are
on your property or in your store).
Implement a “Managers Only” policy on answering the store’s telephone.
