Operations
When a fire protection system must be taken out of service, the Red Tag Permit System is designed to
manage this impairment to necessitate protection. The precautions recommended by this permit system
are designed to minimize the risk of catastrophic damage from fire, while a fire protection system has
been taken out of service.
Impairment occurs whenever any fire protection system must be taken out of service for any reason. This
includes automatic sprinklers, carbon dioxide kitchen hood systems and alarm systems.
The procedures to be followed are listed below for each phase of the impairment. If you have any questions
on what needs to be done, please contact Risk Management or FM Global for help.
BEFORE THE IMPAIRMENT OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
Plan to do the work when the store is not operating.
Plan to shut down hazardous processes (hot surfaces, cutting and welding, painting, etc.).
Have everything ready before impairing fire protection equipment.
Plan for temporary protection such as extra extinguishers, charged hose lines and temporary sprinkler protection.
Notify the public fire department so that they can be prepared to handle an emergency.
Use the FM Global Red Tag Permit System.
Notify the FM Global Customer Service Desk in the office handling your area.
If an Emergency Impairment (water main break, sprinkler head hit, etc.) occurs, stabilize the situation and initiate the
above precautions.
DURING THE IMPAIRMENT OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
Shut down hazardous operations.
Restrict smoking within the store.
Restrict all types of hot work (see “Hot Work” procedures for more information).
Have security or assigned Team Members patrol areas where the fire protection is out of service.
Continue the work until the protection can be restored.
Use the FM Global Red Tag Permit System.
AFTER FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS ARE RETURNED TO SERVICE
Make certain the fire protection is placed back in automatic service.
Assure the fire sprinkler control valve is wide open and then lock it in the wide-open position.
Reset the alarm system and notify the alarm company.
Notify the store emergency team and the local fire department.
Notify FM Global by telephone that the impairment has been cleared.
Complete the Red Tag Permit and maintain in file for future review.
A kit can be requested by contacting the Customer Service Desk. Contact Brian Gilbert, FM Global at
