• Lack of capital for new facilities construction or current facilities improvement
• Too eager to create partnerships without a strategic plan
• Poor acquisition strategy when Central Coast Cooling was acquired
• Union contracts prohibit creating a tiered compensation System for each job
creating mediocrity
• No job descriptions
• No career path for workforce
• No community outreach
• Lack of use of Information Technology
• No risk assessment policies
• No procedures to protect patents or other intellectual property
• The current facilities in Salinas are old and poorly laid out as a consequence
Growers Ice tenants have increased cost by duplicating labor to cover each cold
storage facility
• Ice making capability can be off-line sometimes for hours due to mechanical
breakdown
• Lack of trust from employees of ownership
• No performance evaluations
• High power cost
• Excessive Overtime
• Post Harvest Technology mismanagement and lack of leadership (note: PHT is a
separate company with no ownership by Growers Ice Company.) However, one
could easily make the case it was under the direction of the previous General
Manager and the board members of PHT and GIC are one in the same for the most
part. The demise of this company is by far the worst case of mismanagement and
missed opportunity I have seen in many years.
Opportunities
• Board of Directors and shareholders adopt the recommendations contained in the
strategic plan as developed by JL White International
• Acquisition of other cold storage facilities and other supply chain companies
• Create long-term contracts with grower shippers
• Explore sales and marketing opportunities in the USA and developing countries for
ice injectors, hydro coolers, vacuum tube coolers, ice generators, condensers, ice
Storage, evaporators and other equipment to support vegetable precooling, concrete
cooling, fishing, poultry, bakery and other industry requiring mobile and permanent
solutions and cold storage operations
• Talk to the US Department of Agriculture, USAID, and World Bank about funding
opportunities to support Growers Ice International expansion
• Team with nonprofits and NGO’s to enhance domestic and international business
expansion
• Create a 21st-century pre-cooling and cold storage facility in Salinas incorporating
the latest technology to include exploring robotics, installing inventory and bar
